Phillips, Medaille to host seminar series
Phillips Lytle LLP and Medaille College have partnered to host a seminar series to address modern political issues viewed through a constitutional lens. Three seminars are scheduled at the Medaille College Rochester campus on consecutive Thursdays in November.
Each session is designed to encourage a dialogue between political opinion leaders on issues ranging from a modern-day look at the Federalist Papers to the functionality of the New York State Constitution. The series is by invitation only, with a limited number of seats available per session.
"This is an exciting new partnership between the fields of law and higher education," said Medaille College President Richard Jurasek. "Our goal is to use our resources to bring intelligent individuals to speak and engage in thought-provoking discussions at each seminar."
Julie Philipp, news director of WXXI, will serve as moderator:
• Nov. 3 - "The Federalist Papers, U.S. Constitution and Modern-Day Tea Party Movement" will focus on the U.S. Constitution as viewed through the Federalist Papers, a historical perspective, in relation to the current Tea Party movement.
• Nov. 10 - "Democracy in the United States and Canada" will feature a politician who will discuss matters of democracy in Canada, as well as an elected official who will present a contrasting perspective on democracy in the United States.
• Nov. 17 - "Is the New York State Constitution 'Broken'?" will address the functionality of the constitution from opposing views.
"We're often faced with so many rumors and perceptions of democracy; therefore, it is vitally important to be informed of both sides of the story," said Phillips Lytle partner Kenneth Manning. "It's an important part of American history that open and honest discourse be encouraged and supported by both the private and public sector."

ALSP to meet Oct. 28
The Buffalo chapter of the Association of Litigation Support Professionals will meet from 12:10 to 1:10 p.m., Oct. 28 at the Ellicott Square Building, Bears Conference Room, 295 Main St.
Craig Bowman of Phillips Lytle LLP will discuss "Customizing Search Terms to Maximize Document Review."
According to the association, there was a point in time where the typical goal of a document review was to code a population of documents and provide to opposing counsel. Over the years, the ability to launch a more sophisticated/strategic review process has become more commonplace, with clients reaping the benefits of cost/time savings.
Litigants also are becoming more hands-on with the management of a review. They should expect that the end result be a reduction of the overall time investment from their team as well, as quality production. Making the most of search terms, and identifying what to look for in hidden data, is a key factor on the road to a successful team effort, it says.
The session will include a segment on search terms and how to search/customize them using different search engines. Bowman will discuss DT Search, SQL Search and more.
