BRIEFS: Eagan Named BAEC Lawyer of the Year

The Bar Association of Erie County named Gayle Eagan Lawyer of the Year for 2011. The award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the legal profession and the Western New York community, will be presented at the annual dinner June 8 at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.
Eagan is a partner in the estates and trusts practice group at Jaeckle Fleischmann & Mugel. She concentrates her practice on estate planning, trusts and estate administration, and litigation, surrogate's court practice, elder law and adoptions.
The Lawyer of the Year award notes her leadership and involvement with Legal Services for the Elderly, Disabled or Disadvantaged of WNY and her recent efforts as co-founder of Canopy of Neighbors, Inc., an organization that offers assistance to senior citizens who want to remain in their homes.
Eagan also serves as secretary of the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo Inc. She is past president of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York, the local chapter of the Women's Bar Association and the Estates Analysts of Western New York.
Jennifer Flannery, an associate in Damon Morey's trusts and estates department, will be a speaker at the New York State Bar Association's Continuing Legal Education program on estate litigation.
The full-day course is scheduled for June 1 at the Holiday Inn, Amherst. The CLE will highlight hands-on litigation strategies and approaches, as well as Surrogate's Court rules governing litigation in probate and accounting matters and in miscellaneous proceedings.
Flannery also is scheduled to speak at a seminar on long-term care for the 8th District Dental Society, sponsored by Walsh Duffield's Jacob Hauck Agency. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., June 23 at the district's main offices at 3831 Harlem Road, Buffalo. Her topic is "Advanced Directives."
At Damon Morey, Flannery's practice involves trusts and estate planning and administration, with a focus on trust and estate litigation. She is also an adjunct professor in the legal studies department at Hilbert College.
The Erie Institute of Law will present a CLE program on "Secrets of Successful Advocates in Mediation" on June 9 at Templeton's Landing in Buffalo. The program will cover such things as preparing a client for mediation, selection of a mediator, do's and don'ts in your mediation presentation, and preparing and working with the mediator.
Registration begins at 12:30 p.m., with the first speaker scheduled at 1 p.m. Among the dozen speakers expected are New York State Bar Association President Vincent Doyle III, who will introduce Edna Sussman, chairman of the dispute resolution section of the New York State Bar Association. Also scheduled to present at the CLE are attorneys Richard Griffin, Edward Schwendler, Donald Eppers, Andrea Sammarco, Matthew Beck, Douglas Coppola, Krista Gottlieb, W. Craig James and E. Michael Semple.
Cost for the event is $70 for BAEC members, $105 for nonmembers, $40 for paralegals. Law students may attend at no cost. To register or for more information, call 852-8687.
Administrative Judge Paula Feroleto of the 8th Judicial District and state Supreme Court Justice Penney Wolfgang will be among those honored at the seventh annual Women in the Law Awards Luncheon scheduled June 15 at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo. Eight women from Western New York will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the bench, the bar and the community. The event will begin at noon. Tickets are $25.
