LEGAL BRIEFS: Scholarship in memory of Buffalo's Arnold Gardner

Mon, May 9th 2011 12:00 am

A scholarship has been established at the Buffalo Urban League in memory of Buffalo attorney Arnold Gardner, who spent 56 years with Kavinoky & Cook law firm, Buffalo.

His public service focused on education. He served on the Buffalo Board of Education from 1969 to 1974 and was an advocate for desegregation and a level playing field for urban youth. He was president of the board from 1971 to 1972. Later, he served from 1980 to 1999 as a trustee of the State University of New York. Beginning in 1999, he was named an at-large member of the New York Board of Regents, where he served until 2009.

Gardner always fought to ensure that all students had access to high-quality public education.

He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Buffalo where he graduated summa cum laude. He also was a graduate of Harvard Law School.

The scholarship reflects his connections to the Buffalo Public Schools and SUNY. It will be given to a student set to graduate from a Buffalo public high school who plans to attend a SUNY school. The individual must demonstrate scholastic ability and community involvement.

"We are most grateful that friends and colleagues of Arnold's felt this was a fitting legacy for him, reflecting his commitment to access to education," said Brenda McDuffie, president and chief executive of the Buffalo Urban League.

"This is one small way we can ensure his life's work will be continued," she said.

Donations to the fund are tax-deductible. Send to: Arnold B. Gardner Scholarship Fund, c/o Buffalo Urban League, 15 Genesee St., Buffalo NY 14203.

The scholarship will be awarded as part of the Buffalo Urban League's annual scholarship award ceremony in June.
