Counterfeiting a problem as Black Friday approaches

Mon, Nov 29th 2010 12:00 am
ALBANY (AP) - With Black Friday looming, retailers across New York state are being offered some training in detecting counterfeit money.

The Albany County District Attorney's Office says it's hosting the Nov. 29 training session along with the Retail Council of New York State.

Members of the Secret Service will be at the training session, to be held at the Colonie Center shopping mall in suburban Albany.

Law enforcement officials say there has been a significant increase in counterfeiting in the Albany area over the past year.

Officials say counterfeiters use the region's highway system and the multitude of retailers to exchange bogus dollars for merchandise and gift cards, then leave the area quickly.

The training session will give retailers tips on how to detect counterfeit cash and prevent it from being passed.
