Mo Hassan tells judge he has been beaten in Holding Center

Mon, Nov 22nd 2010 12:00 am
BUFFALO (AP) - The founder of a Muslim-oriented television station says he doesn't feel safe in jail as he awaits trial on charges he beheaded his wife.

Muzzammil Hassan expressed those concerns last week at a pretrial conference in Erie County Court, where he told the judge he's been beaten by sheriff's deputies at the county jail.

Hassan's lawyer asked the judge to order jail videotapes preserved.

The judge didn't immediately rule.

A call to a sheriff's department spokeswoman wasn't immediately returned.

Aasiya Hassan was killed in 2009 inside the TV station she and her husband established to promote cultural understanding. She had recently filed for divorce.

Hassan's murder trial is scheduled to start Jan. 10.
