NYSBA announces fall CLE classes

The New York State Bar Association released its October schedule of continuing legal education workshops in Buffalo. They include:

Practical Skills: Basic Matrimonial Practice

Wednesday, Oct. 6; 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

This practical skills program is designed for the newly admitted attorney or the attorney seeking a fundamental but practical overview of handling matrimonial matters. It consists of six major topic areas, to be taught through lectures coordinated with comprehensive materials. At the conclusion of each lecture, there will be a brief Q&A period with experienced matrimonial attorneys.

Location: Holiday Inn, 1881 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst

Credits: 6.5 MCLE (3.0 Professional Practice; 2.0 Skills; 1.5 Ethics)

Henry Miller - The Trial

Friday, Oct. 8; 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Nationally recognized trial attorney Henry Miller will hold a seminar on trial practice. It covers every phase of trial and lessons from famous trials, with live demonstrations and practical tips on trial advocacy for both new and experienced attorneys. It includes pre-trial preparation, opening statements, examination, summation, post-trial activity and a segment on ethics.

Expert Testimony: What You Need to Know in New York

Friday, Oct. 15; 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

This seminar will provide an update on the statutory and case law affecting the admissibility of evidence and expert testimony. Learn how to qualify experts and their reports. A panel of experienced litigators will provide practical advice, strategies and tips on expert testimony. Get proven methods for finding the right experts for your case; find out how to select experts; learn how to prepare your expert to perform well on the stand; and get practical tips on eliciting the information you need from experts.

Practical Skills: Probate and Administration of Estates

Wednesday, Oct. 20; 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

This basic program will explore the proceedings involved in probate and estate administration. Experienced practitioners in the field will take you step by step through the actual administration of an estate, from determining the nature and extent of a decedent's assets and liabilities to discussion of tax issues that may affect the beneficiaries of the estate. Ethical considerations for attorneys handling estates will also covered, as well as accounting requirements for wrapping up a decedent's estate.

Matrimonial Law: New Legislation, Counsel Fees, Relocation and Ethics

The fall 2010 family law seminar addresses several high-profile and high-impact areas of interest and concern to matrimonial practitioners. An expert panel will explore topics such as recent legislative changes to child custody laws, no-fault divorce, orders of protection and child support, as well as client relations and Rules of Professional Conduct.
