Man sent to prison for selling knock-off condoms

Mon, Aug 16th 2010 12:00 am
NEW YORK (AP) - A New York man who helped distribute more than 1 million faulty, counterfeit condoms has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison.

Jian Wang had pleaded guilty to trafficking in counterfeit goods after the fake Trojan condoms were seized along with other brand-name knockoffs from a storage unit in Hicksville.

Prosecutors alleged the knock-off condoms were tested and found to be defective.

Judge Brian Cogan said during sentencing last week that the 44-year-old Wang had put people at risk.

Wang's lawyer, Glenn Obedin, had asked that his client not receive prison time because his crime was nonviolent.

Prosecutors say Wang was a member of a six-person ring who trafficked in a variety of fake brand-name goods made in China.
