NJ jury convicts man who attacked lawyer at trial

Mon, Mar 8th 2010 12:00 am
TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey jury has convicted a defendant who attacked his defense lawyer during his trial.

Anthony Montgomery, 41, of Neptune, N.J., faced numerous charges stemming from a high-speed chase in May 2008. They included carjacking, aggravated assault, eluding police and assaulting an officer. He was convicted Wednesday on nine counts.

Tuesday, Montgomery smacked public defender Philip Pagano in the face when the defense attorney called him to the witness stand. Later, the shackled defendant grabbed a microphone stand and flung it at Pagano as sheriff's officers were leading him out of the Toms River courtroom.

The judge refused Pagano's request to declare a mistrial.
