O'Connor: Campaign ruling 'a concern' in judicial races
Associated Press
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Retired Supreme Court Justice Hon. Sandra Day O'Connor says the high court's ruling on campaign finance earlier this year "ought to be a concern to every state that still elects judges."
O'Connor said Wednesday that the January ruling allowing more corporate and labor-union campaign spending on elections "can find its way into judicial elections as well."
O'Connor spoke during a panel discussion on the future of judicial elections in Maryland. She is taking part in a nationwide push during this year's state legislative sessions to end the practice of electing judges.
Many judges and the American Bar Association argue that the legal system is tainted by judges seeking campaign donations.
