State judge faces discipline for campaign-trail promises

Mon, Feb 22nd 2010 12:00 am
ALBANY (AP) - A New York panel says a state judge should be admonished for making campaign promises to pistol permit holders.

The state Commission on Judicial Conduct found that state Supreme Court Justice Hon. Patrick McGrath of Rensselaer County made improper pledges or promises to pistol permit holders and his power to award the permits.

At issue is a letter the commission says the Democrat sent to 7,000 permit holders saying he looked forward to serving them for another 14 years. The judge noted that he, too, has a pistol permit.

The commission says Tuesday that judicial candidates must avoid promises inconsistent with the impartial performance of their jobs.

McGrath, who won the 2008 election, can appeal the findings. His lawyer didn't immediately comment.
