Breyer gives speech at Yale Law

Thu, Feb 18th 2010 12:00 am
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hon. Stephen Breyer told an audience at Yale Law School this week that he considers Cooper v. Aaron to be the most significant case in his memory.

His speech Monday night was called ‘‘History: Challenges the Court Has Faced.'' About 200 people attended.

The 1958 case Cooper v. Aaron followed Brown v. Board of Education. Breyer says Cooper was the first time the court held itself supreme over rulings by the states.

Breyer was recently in the minority in the Supreme Court ruling that struck down restrictions on corporate campaign spending.

He was also in the minority in a decision in favor of white New Haven firefighters who said they were victims of reverse discrimination when they were denied promotions.
