Lumsden & McCormick in search of new offices

Lumsden & McCormick LLP, one of the area's largest CPA firms, has started a search for new offices.

It doesn't mean, however, that the firm is definitely leaving the Brisbane Building, where it has leased 24,000 square feet for nearly 19 years.

"We've only moved twice since the firm was founded in 1955, so it is clearly not something we do every day," said John Oehler, managing partner.

Lumsden & McCormick has employees. The firm's search is expected to attract the attention of landlords and generate attractive lease offers.

Clarke Thrasher of Hunt Commercial Real Estate Corp. was retained to handle the site search. Lumsden & McCormick's lease expires in September 2011.

"We figured we were going to need two years' lead time," Oehler said. "We want to make a sound decision and not a rash one. This is a decision that will impact the firm for the next 10 or 20 years."

Oehler said Thrasher helped his firm narrow the search to eight locations - all downtown - including the Brisbane Building.

He said he is encouraged by recent developments near the Brisbane Building. Developer Rocco Termini and the Hamister Group are planning a $70 million makeover of the long-vacant former AM&A's department store down the block, and Termini also is considering buying and renovating the Hotel Lafayette.

"It may be that we stay put," Oehler said. "There's enough happening around here."

He expects Lumsden & McCormick to make a decision by midsummer, adding, "Whatever it will be, it will be one that's in the best interest of the firm."
