NEW YORK (AP) - A New York Police Department report says nearly 1 in 6 undercover officers have been mistaken for suspects by fellow officers - and came face-to-face with a loaded gun.
Gov. David Paterson ordered the report after a May 28 incident in which an off-duty officer in plainclothes was killed by another officer who mistook him for a criminal. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly detailed the information in a plan to avoid such shootings.
Incidents where undercover officers are actually fired on and killed are rare.
