Openings created on NY judge-nomination panel

New York's Commission on Judicial Nomination currently has two vacancies to be filled.

The first, created by the resignation of Frederick Brewington, is to fill a term ending on March 31; Brewington's successor will be selected by Gov. David Paterson.

The second vacancy, created by the resignation of former commissioner Edward Cox, is for a term ending March 31, 2013, and will be selected by the minority leader of the state Assembly, Brian Kolb.

The commission encourages bar associations, civic groups and other interested parties to consider recommending highly qualified individuals to Minority Leader Kolb and Governor Paterson.

Hogan joins Multi-Million Advocates

Attorney Corey Hogan, founder and majority owner of the law firm HoganWillig, has been certified as a member of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum.

The Forum is made up of attorneys who have acted as principal counsel in at least one case resulting in a multimillion-dollar verdict, award or settlement.

Hogan is a life member of an affiliated group, the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. That organization has approximately 3,000 members nationwide.

DTLA announces officer candidates

The Defense Trial Lawyers Association of Western New York announced the slate of officers for its 2010 elections, to be conducted at the organization's annual meeting Dec. 9 at the Buffalo Chophouse.

The candidates are Nelson Schule, vice president; Bill Nitterauer, treasurer; Walter Pacer, secretary; and Kelly Philips, Joseph Goergen and Carl Brownell, board members.

Trial lawyer James Burgio will also be honored at the meeting with the Robert M. Kiebala Memorial Award, recognizing him as the 2009 Defense Trial Lawyer of the Year.

Outgoing board members Robert Hartford and Jill Tuholski will also be recognized for their service to the organization.

Hurwitz's Perley speaks at insurance conference

Michael Perley, an attorney with Hurwitz & Fine PC, spoke at the Property Loss Research Bureau/Liability Insurance Research Bureau 2009 Large Loss Conference in Tampa, Fla., Nov. 2.

Perley's presentation was titled "It's All About the Science: Defending Your Insured Against a Large Fire Loss."

Perley serves on his firm's 24-hour emergency response team, developing strategies for effective response to complex catastrophic property damage and bodily injury litigation. He has defended corporations, municipalities, building owners, contractors and insurance carriers.

Greenbaum gives seminar for artists

Attorney Leslie Greenbaum of the law firm Gross Shuman Brizdle & Gilfillan PC presented a seminar Oct. 27 at the Buffalo Arts Studio covering sales tax, income tax and estate planning issues specific to artists.

At Gross Schuman, Greenbaum focuses his practice on trademark, copyright, intellectual-property, entertainment, art and sports law.
