Tioga Co. millionaire gets maximum for wife's murder

Thu, Oct 8th 2009 12:00 am
OWEGO (AP) - A millionaire upstate New York businessman is going to prison for 25 years to life for the 2001 murder of his estranged wife.

Calvin Harris was twice convicted of second-degree murder by different Tioga County juries in the slaying of his missing 35-year-old wife, Michele. Harris won a retrial after his first conviction in 2007 when a new witness came forward. He was convicted again in August.

Monday, the 48-year-old Harris told Hon. James Hayden that he was sentencing an innocent man. His lawyer has appealed the conviction.

Michele Harris' body and the murder weapon have never been found.

The couple were in the midst of a bitter divorce and both had affairs. Authorities say Harris, who owned a string of car dealerships, killed his wife to avoid a large divorce settlement.
