State judge admonished over women's shelter issue

Mon, Aug 10th 2009 12:00 am
NEW YORK (AP) - New York's Commission on Judicial Conduct has admonished a judge who punished a lawyer for refusing to reveal where a battered woman was being sheltered.

The Long Island lawyer was fined $1,000. She had the legal right to keep the shelter's address a secret for safety reasons.

Nassau Family Court Judge Hon. Conrad Singer also was cited for visiting a 14-year-old at a mental-health facility. The child's lawyers didn't know about the visit.

The commission acknowledged that Singer was probably trying to do what was best for the boy. But it said the visit was improper.

Singer's lawyer, Michael Ross, calls the incidents "regrettable mistakes by a conscientious judge who had just taken the bench."
