GM out of bankruptcy
Officials from GM and the federal government signed the necessary paperwork at 6:30 a.m. at the offices of Weil Gotshal & Manges, the company's chief bankruptcy counsel, according to the New York Times. The signing ended the company's 40 days under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a period that began on June 1.
The federal government holds 61 percent of the new General Motors Co., which will retain the Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC brands.
Other General Motors brands, such as Hummer, Opel, Pontiac, Saturn, have been sold or are in the process of being sold.
Plans call for the new company to become publicly traded sometime in 2010.
