NY jury: Pregnant officer suffered discrimination

Thu, Jul 9th 2009 12:00 am
CENTRAL ISLIP (AP) - A federal jury says park police discriminated against a pregnant officer when they refused to put her on light duty.

Officials in Suffolk County gave Tara Germain the choice to either do her regular job or take unpaid leave in 2007.

Germain also said she wasn't allowed to use paid leave that her husband, a Suffolk County police sergeant, offered to donate to her.

The jurors in Central Islip will decide later this month whether Germain will receive damages.

County Attorney Christine Malafi says the government does not want the case to become a precedent for others seeking light-duty status.

Jurors rejected Germain's claim that she was discriminated against when she applied for a promotion to sergeant.
