50 subpoenaed in probe of immigration-law fraud

Thu, Jun 4th 2009 12:00 am
NEW YORK (AP) - More than 50 people and organizations in and around New York City have been subpoenaed as part of state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's probe into immigration fraud.

The subpoenas issued May 28 aim to discover whether their recipients are providing fraudulent immigration services and practicing law illegally.

Under state law, only lawyers or accredited representatives can represent people before immigration authorities, and immigration service providers must comply with a range of laws governing their advertising, contracts and other business practices.

Last month, Cuomo sued a Queens woman he says defrauded immigrants out of more than $80,000 by falsely telling them she could help them get legal U.S. residency.
