Hairdresser gets maximum in deadly parking-lot attack

Mon, Apr 27th 2009 12:00 am
ROCHESTER (AP) - A woman has been sentenced to five-to-15 years in prison for ramming her car into a crowd during a melee outside a Rochester bar, killing a man and injuring four women.

Sandra Arena, a 48-year-old mother, drew the maximum sentence for second-degree manslaughter after a non-jury trial in March, when she was acquitted of second-degree murder.

Arena, a hairdresser from the suburb of Webster, said she was trying to come to the aid of a girlfriend being attacked last August outside Nasty D's Bar and Grill. She said she expected the crowd to scatter and didn't mean to harm anyone.

Chad Coleman died after being pinned under the car. One of the four injured women was the friend Arena said she was trying to help.
