Wechsler event Saturday

Thu, Mar 26th 2009 12:00 am
The University at Buffalo Law School's Criminal Law Society will host the 11th annual Herbert Wechsler National Criminal Law Moot Court Competition Saturday at Erie County Hall.

Twenty-five teams from around the country are competing in the competition, including two from UB Law. Teams from Brooklyn Law School, Duke Law School, the University of Connecticut School of Law, Santa Clara University, the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Ohio State University, the University of Houston Law Center, Loyola Chicago School of Law and the University of North Dakota School of Law will also participate.

The Wechsler event is the only national moot-court competition in the U.S. to focus on topics in substantive criminal law. The problem at the center of this year's competition focuses on whether a district court's jury instruction on corporate criminal liability was legal under Supreme Court precedent and federal law.

The final round will begin at approximately 4 p.m. in the ceremonial courtroom. Final-round judges include Hon. Eugene Pigott Jr. of the state Court of Appeals; retired Court of Appeals Justice Hon. George Bundy Smith, Erie County Supreme Court Justice Hon. Kevin Dillon and federal magistrate judge Hon. Jonathan Feldman.
