O'Donnell adds safety post to duties for state

Thu, Jan 29th 2009 12:00 am
Buffalo resident Denise O'Donnell has picked up added duties in the administration of Gov. David Paterson.

O'Donnell, commissioner of the state Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), was named Monday as deputy secretary for Public Safety. She replaces Michael Balboni, who resigned effective Feb. 2 to work in the private sector.

O'Donnell will oversee all security and criminal-justice agencies, including DCJS, the Office of Homeland Security, the Division of State Police, the Department of Corrections, the Division of Parole, the Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives, the Division of Military and Naval Affairs, the state Emergency Management Office, the Crime Victims Board, the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, and the state Commission of Correction.

Paterson said O'Donnell will retain her DCJS title. The public-safety position pays $165,000 annually and does not require state Senate approval.

O'Donnell's husband, John, is a state Supreme Court justice in Buffalo.
