Prosecutors: Manhattan man posed as immigration lawyer

Mon, Jan 26th 2009 12:00 am
NEW YORK (AP) - A New Yorker accused of posing as a lawyer has been arrested on charges of stealing money from immigrants who wanted help getting visas, work and residency papers.

Prosecutors say 59-year-old Victor Espinal pretended since at least 1992 to be an immigration attorney although he has no law license. They say his clients were mostly people from the Caribbean and Central America who paid fees of up to $3,000 each.

Prosecutors say Espinal was arrested Wednesday at his Manhattan office based on three complaints. They say other cases are being investigated.

Espinal has been indicted on grand larceny, scheme to defraud and related charges. He faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors say they don't know the name of his lawyer. There's no answer at his office telephone number.
