Utica woman gets 10 years for killing 'abusive' husband

Mon, Jan 12th 2009 12:00 am
UTICA (AP) - A 43-year-old upstate woman stood defiantly even as she listened to the hate-filled words from family members of the man she admitted stabbing to death last April.

Then Jady Voce of Utica was sentenced Jan. 5 to 10 years in state prison for killing her 49-year-old husband, Joseph Voce, in April.

The Utica resident pleaded guilty in November in Oneida County Court to first-degree manslaughter. She could have faced 25 years in prison if convicted after trial.

Voce said she and her husband had been drinking and using cocaine the night of the stabbing. Voce described the couple's relationship as mutually abusive and said she feared for her safety and acted in self-defense.

Voce apologized to family members before she was sentenced.
