Nonprofit selects Nowak for humanitarian award

Buffalo City Court Judge Hon. Henry Nowak will be honored as Humanitarian of the Year at a fundraising dinner for Buffalo ReUse Nov. 22.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Law Offices of Hughes & Wray, 63 Kenmore Ave. in Buffalo. Tickets are $25 per person.

Buffalo ReUse is a nonprofit that salvages materials from properties slated for demolition. For more information, call Michele Johnson at 602-4036.

Niagara Bar teams with WBASNY on CLE

The Bar Association of Niagara County, in cooperation with the Western New York chapter of the Women's Bar Association of the State of New York, will sponsor a continuing legal education course this Saturday.

The seminar, Practice and Procedure Before the Court of Claims and Department of Social Services, will run from 9 a.m.-noon at the Lockport Town & Country Club, 717 East Ave., Lockport. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Presenters are Hon. Michael Hudson of the New York State Court of Claims, Tom Scirto, chief counsel with the Niagara County Department of Social Services, and lawyers Laura Wagner and Ron Sutton.

The basic-level course qualifies for 3 hours of standard or transitional continuing legal education credit.

McCafferty to speak at annual Tax Institute

Lawyer/CPA Brendan McCafferty, special counsel to Magavern Magavern Grimm LLP, will be a featured speaker at the 55th Tax Institute, to be held Nov. 6 and 7 at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.

The seminar, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., is designed to provide tax practitioners with up-to-date information about the substance and administration of tax laws. It is sponsored by the University at Buffalo School of Management, New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and Erie Institute of Law. For more information, call 852-8687.

Battaglia takes part in tax seminar

Paul Battaglia will give an update on federal corporate tax issues at the 2008 Tax Update Seminar Nov. 18 at the Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston. He is a partner in the tax and estates-and-trusts practice groups at Jaeckle Fleischmann & Mugel LLP, and an assistant professor at the University at Buffalo Law School. The program, sponsored by the Institute of Management Accountants, Niagara Falls chapter, will be held from 11:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
