Property tax hearings set across NY

Mon, Sep 8th 2008 12:00 am
A series of meetings on the issue of property tax relief is planned for six metropolitan areas across the state including Buffalo.

The public sessions were announced Thursday by Gov. David Paterson and Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi. Suozzi is heading up a governor-appointed commission to rework the state's formula on property taxes.

Suozzi's panel has made recommendations in a preliminary report that is due to be finalized by Dec. 1. State lawmakers have also introduced measures to provide relief to property owners who pay some of the highest taxes in the country. However, there are differences in the legislation proposed in the state Senate and Assembly.

The hearings begin Sept. 9 on Long Island. The Buffalo session is set for Oct. 30. Other stops are for Albany, Oct. 2; Yonkers, Oct. 22; Rochester, Nov. 5; and Syracuse, Nov. 12.
