City ranks low on income index, high on poverty rate

Thu, Aug 28th 2008 12:00 am
The City of Buffalo continues to rank poorly in two economic statistics - income and poverty - as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The government study released Tuesday said the median household income for Buffalo in 2007 increased 6.6 percent to $29,706, but was still seventh-lowest among large U.S. cities with population above 250,000. A year ago, median income in Buffalo was $27,850.

According to the Census Bureau, real household median income grew 1.3 percent in the past year to $50,233. The Dallas suburb of Plano, Texas, again had the highest median household income in the country at $84,492. Detroit was last at $28,097.

The poverty rate for Buffalo was 28.7 percent, placing the city third from the bottom behind two other Great Lakes cities. Buffalo rated second-lowest last year. Detroit has the nation's highest poverty rate at 33.8 percent, followed by Cleveland at 29.5 percent.

The Census Bureau report cites a small margin of error that could raise or lower the figures in each category.
