New product-safety law could mean more lawsuits

More than 20.7 million businesses didn't have employees in 2006, but they generated more than $970 billion in total revenue, according to a new Census Bureau report.
These nonemployer businesses included 18.2 million sole proprietorships, 1.4 million corporations and 1.2 million partnerships.
Nearly 8 million of these businesses were in three sectors: real estate, rental and leasing; construction; and professional, scientific and technical services.
Nonemployer businesses reported average receipts per location of $46,724.
