Law tightens real estate licensing
Business First
Realtors across the state are applauding a new law signed by Gov. David Paterson that precludes any convicted sex offenders from obtaining a real estate broker's or agent's license.
Under the legislation, signed Thursday, any convicted sex offender is immediately barred from holding a New York real estate license, and any convicted sex offenders who already have a license must report their convictions to the New York State Department of Law by Aug. 13.
The measure has been championed by Realtor associations across New York.
"It offers a new level of protection," said James Knight, Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors president.
The law closes a loophole that only precluded convicted felons from obtaining a state-issued real estate license. Misdemeanor-level sex offenders had been eligible to hold a license.
Knight said tightening up the real estate licensing requirements has been a top agenda item, both locally and across the state.
"New Yorkers will be safer as a result of this new law," said Linda Page, New York State Association of Realtors president.
