Fugitive arrested in London
U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia says Avrum Friesel has been charged in a scheme to receive undeserved federal funds for the Hasidic Village of New Square.
Four co-defendants were convicted in 1999 and their sentences were shortened by President Bill Clinton. An investigation into whether there was a deal to get New Square's votes for Hillary Rodham Clinton in her 2000 Senate race resulted in no charges.
Another man who fled prosecution, Chaim Berger, was arrested in Israel in 1999, pleaded guilty in 2002 and died in prison in 2004.
Friesel appeared before a London judge on Tuesday and has a May 7 bail hearing.
