Mickey Mouse paintings recovered after 17 years
Rye Brook police say an antiques dealer in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., contacted authorities last year. He had acquired the Walt Disney Co. artworks after a sale of unwanted items from a Florida storage facility. His research showed that they had been taken in 1991 from what was then the International Museum of Cartoon Art.
Rye Brook Police Chief Gregory Austin says the watercolors were valued at $60,000 to $80,000 when stolen.
The museum moved to Boca Raton, Fla., in the 1990s, but closed in 2001. Its Web site says it has changed its name to the National Cartoon Museum and is looking for a new home. The organizers did not immediately respond to an e-mail.
