Court: State law won't protect terror author from Saudi libel

Thu, Dec 27th 2007 12:00 am
ALBANY (AP) - New York's highest court says a state law won't shield an author from a Saudi businessman who successfully sued her in England for libel over her book on terrorism funding.

Rachel Ehrenfeld of Manhattan, author of "Funding Evil: How Terrorism is Financed - and How to Stop It," had contended that the state's "long-arm" law would allow her to fight the judgment billionaire Khalid Salim Bin Mahfouz won against her in London. The state law establishes jurisdiction for almost anyone who has done business in New York, even if it was only a single transaction.

But the state Court of Appeals says the law doesn't apply to this case because Mahfouz's only business in New York is the lawsuit involving the author.
