Soldier's wife charged with perjury during rape trial

Thu, Nov 15th 2007 12:00 am
WATERTOWN (AP) - State police have brought perjury charges against the wife of a Fort Drum soldier who recanted her rape accusations against her husband on the witness stand during his trial.

Jody Thomas, 32, was charged Nov. 7 in Pamelia Town Court with three counts of first-degree perjury. She was released on $1,000 bail.

Thomas had accused her husband, Ronnie Thomas, 36, of assaulting her in October 2006 in their Alexandria Bay home by tying her arms together, confining her to a room, raping her and pushing her down stairs. Ronnie Thomas also was accused of attacking his wife's boyfriend.

Ronnie Thomas went on trial for rape and attempted murder in Jefferson County Court in July, but the case against him collapsed when Jody Thomas changed her story and said the sex was consensual.

Ronnie Thomas successfully argued that he stabbed the other man in self defense and was acquitted of rape and attempted-murder charges, although the jury found him guilty of criminal trespass, criminal mischief and petit larceny.

State police did not say whether Jody Thomas committed the perjury while contending that her husband raped her or later, when she recanted.
